About ASSET
ASSET, the ASsociation of Southern-European Economic Theorists (ASsociation Soud-Européenne d'Economie Theoretique / ASociacion Sud-Europea de Economia Teorica), is a group of economics departments and economics research centres situated in Cyprus, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey. The purpose of the association is to encourage among the participating research institutions the development of economic problems that meet international standards of quality in quantitative economics and econometrics. To this end, the group promotes exchanges of researchers and of ideas among institutions that are all based in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean. Today, ASSET has nineteen member institutions.
ASSET had as its origin a Franco-Spanish collaboration that began in 1979 on the initiative of researchers of the universities of Aix-Marseille, Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid, and Toulouse. Its activities received financial support from 1984 to 1986 within the framework of activities linked to Franco-Spanish cooperation, and subsequently obtained support, in 1987 and 1988, from the CNRS and the CAICYT. ASSET has also been the beneficiary of grants from a number of universities, in particular, the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and for the period mid 1989 to mid 1993 received funding within the framework of the SPES programme of the European Union. This was then followed from 1994 by funding within the framework of Human Capital and Mobility Programme of the European Commission.
From 1990 onwards the chairman of ASSET was Louis-André Gérard-Varet, (EHESS & GREQAM, Marseilles). He was preceded by Juan Urrutia, (Juan Carlos University, Madrid). The chairman of ASSET was assisted by a board composed of representatives from the different member institutions.
Starting in 1997 ASSET was placed under the responsibility of a president, elected for a period of two years by the ASSET representatives. Louis-André Gerard Varet (EHESS & GREQAM, Marseilles) was the first president elected under this system. He was then followed by Salvador Barbera (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona), Alan Kirman (GREQAM, Marseilles), Tryphon Kollintzas (Athens University of Economics and Business), Semih Koray (Bilkent University), and Chaim Fersthman (Tel Aviv University). Beginning in January 2009, the new president of ASSET is Leonor Modesto (Catholic University of Portugal).
At the same time, a vice-president elected for a period of two years is destined to become president. The first vice-president elected in 1997 was Salvador Barbera (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona). He was then followed by Alan Kirman (GREQAM, Marseilles), Tryphon Kollintzas (Athens University of Economics and Business), Murat Sertel (Bo?aziçi University), Chaim Fersthman (Tel Aviv University), and Leonor Modesto (Catholic University of Portugal). Beginning in January 2009, the new vice-president of ASSET is Emmanuel Petrakis (University of Crete).
Also since 1997, a secretary general elected for a period of four years by the ASSET representatives is responsible for ensuring the administration of ASSET. The first secretary-general was . He was then followed by Semih Koray (Bilkent University) and David Perez-Castrillo (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona). Beginning in January 2009, the new secretary general of ASSET is Antonio Nicoló (University of Padua).
Since 1986 ASSET organizes an annual international conference which nowadays brings together about 200-250 researchers from member and other institutions. This conference is open to researchers working in a number of research-active institutions situated in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean region, but also to researchers outside this area. Through this conference ASSET is gradually becoming a focal point in southern Europe and the Mediterranean for scientific exchanges in all areas of economics.
On the occasion of the annual ASSET conference renowned economists are invited to give lectures. In 1990, one of the invited lectures became known as the Vilfredo Pareto Lecture. Vilfredo Federico Damaso Pareto (1848 1923), an Italian economist, and philosopher made important contributions in the study of income distribution and in the analysis of individuals' choices. He introduced the concept of Pareto efficiency and helped develop the field of microeconomics. The presenter of the Vilfredo Pareto Lecture is chosen by ASSETs board members.
A second invited ASSET lecture was inaugurated in 1993. In 2003 it has been renamed the Murat Sertel Lecture in memory of Murat R. Sertel (19422003) who passed away on January 25, 2003, in Aix-en-Provence, France due to a heart attack. Murat Sertel was a professor of economics at Koç University since 2002 and previously at Bo?aziçi University. Among his many achievements he was the founder and editor-in-chief of Review of Economic Design. He was a member of ASSETs board as the representative of Bo?aziçi University for numerous years and was elected vice-president of ASSET for 2001-2003. The presenter of the Murat Sertel Lecture is chosen by the conference organizing committee.
Following the passing of ASSETs first elected president, Louis-André Gerard-Varet, in January 2001, ASSET instituted the Louis-André Gérard-Varet Prize in his memory. Louis-André Gérard-Varet was Director of Studies at EHESS and Director of GREQAM at Marseilles and was ASSETs chairman from 1990 to 1997 and president from 1997 to 1999. ASSET awards Louis-André Gerard-Varet prizes to young authors, either currently graduate students or within two years of graduating at the time of the conference, of outstanding papers singled out by the program committee among those attending the ASSET conference. In the case of co-authored papers, all authors must be individually eligible.
At the beginnings of ASSET, the member institutions had endeavoured to create an efficient means of communication within the international scientific community. Their endeavours gave rise, in February 1982, to a working paper series entitled "Southern European Economic Discussion Series" (SEEDS), which distributed the research findings of the members of ASSET to 250 Universities worldwide. More than 160 papers have been distributed to date, and of these about three quarters have found their way, after their distribution to these Universities into first-class international journals. In 1997, Oxford University Press started publishing and distributing monographs derived from research in economics and econometrics, undertaken by various members of the ASSET network. An ASSET editorial committee used to select the volumes for publication. Given the multitude of methods researchers can promote their work over the internet nowadays, the working papers series, in its initial format, has been abandoned.
Conference Venue

The 2011 Annual Meeting of the Association of Southern European Economic Theorists (ASSET) is organized by CEFAGE-UE, a research center created in 2006 with the aim of promoting the production and diffusion of high-quality research in economics and management.
In its first application for funding to the 'Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)', CEFAGE-UE achieved the highest FCT grade, "Excellent", one of the few in Portugal in the research area of Economics and Management.
Presently, the research unit of CEFAGE-UE, which is hosted by the University of Evora, has 42 integrated members holding a Ph.D. and 4 members who are currently working towards their PhD.
The research interests of CEFAGE-UEs members cover, among other fields, agricultural economics, econometrics, environmental resources, finance, industrial organization, innovation and entrepreneurship, international economics, labour economics, marketing and consumer behaviour, spatial economics and sustainable growth.
For more information on CEFAGE-UE, visit the website http://www.cefage.uevora.pt.

The University of Evora was founded in 1559 by Cardinal D. Henrique, who handed it over to the Company of Jesus, and for two centuries it distinguished itself for its role in the education of the elites and the missionaries of the Kingdom. In 1759 - two hundred years after its foundation - the University was closed as a consequence of a royal decree that banished the Jesuits from Portugal. Restored as a public University in 1973, it was installed in its original building, the Colégio do Espirito Santo (College of the Holy Spirit), the same building where the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Association of Southern European Economic Theorists (ASSET) will take place. Its campus is now blended in with the city, and is comprised of buildings with a high patrimonial value from different historical periods.
Currently, the University of Evora offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degrees in most scientific areas, with highly qualified teachers and researchers and several Research Centres regularly evaluated by international panels, associated with perennial values such as mutual respect, desire for knowledge, intellectual honesty and freedom of thought.

The 2011 FUE Research Diversity Prize
The Board of Directors of the Urrutia Elejalde Foundation, have the pleasure of announcing the call for nominations for the second edition of the FUE Diversity Prize.
This prize is directed to the enhancement of diversity in quality research by economists working on a variety of fields.
Nominations can be made on behalf of any researcher who now or in the past has worked in some of the institutions affiliated with ASSET. Nominations should include the list of publications of the candidate, with a clear indication of the date and journal when and where they appeared indicating, in the case of Economics, the JEL field or fields each publication belongs to. They may (but need not) include a nomination statement referring to the variety and the quality of the candidate's work in Economics and other fields. Nominations can be made by any researcher or group of researchers working in an institution belonging to ASSET, and by the candidates themselves, if they wish. Last year nominees will be taken into account unless they express their will not to be considered and provided they update their C.V. to include the abovementioned JEL fields.
Submissions have to reach the Foundation (FUE, Fortuny 37, sotabanco dcha. 28010, Madrid, Spain or juan.urrutiaelejalde.org) before June 15, 2011.
The method to classify candidates according to the diversity will take into account both the h index and the number of areas in which the candidate has published as indicated by the web of science. In both cases proper weights will be assigned to the number of papers of quality as reflected by the h index and to the number of areas in which the researcher has made significant contributions.
The FUE will appoint an ad-hoc Committee of four members chaired by the President of the Board of Directors of the Foundation and three other members. Aurelia Modrego, from Universidad Carlos III, will act as Secretary of the Committee. This Committee will choose a unique prize winner among those candidates pre-selected by the President and the Secretary. The decision, not subject to appeal, will be announced by the end of september 2011.
The prize will consist of a sculpture and a substantial direct financial aid for the organization, in connection with the 2012 ASSET meeting, of a special workshop conducted by the winner of the 2011 prize, on subjects reflecting the variety and scope of his of her research interests. The winner, by accepting the prize, will also commit to help organize the meeting. He will be presented the prize during the 2011 ASSET meetings, where the general subject of the special workshop will be announced.
Travel information
The city of Evora
Évora is a quiet and delightful historical city in Alentejo, in the south of Portugal, in the middle of a softly waving peneplain, touched by a Mediterranean climate sweetened by the Atlantic influence of hot, long and dry summers, and soft winters.
A small city of about 60.000 residents with whitewashed houses, arches, and twisting alleyways, 120 km from Lisbon, it was classified by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. It is a true open-air museum, enclosed by medieval walls, with a large number of wonderfully preserved monuments and buildings of public interest: the Roman Temple of Diana, its most famous landmark; the Evora Museum, with its Roman columns, 16th-century paintings, and modern sculpture; the Giraldo Square, the main city square and the best place to start the visit and to return for refreshments; the Cathedral, with a great view over the city; the Church of S. Francisco, displaying the bones and skulls of some 5000 people covering the walls and columns of the church's Chapel of Bones; the Cromlech of Almendres, a megalithic site; among many other interesting places to discover
