Resumo/Abstract: This study aims to assess the economic effects of climate change and adaptation measures on irrigated agriculture of the Mediterranean region, using as proxy a case study in the southern Portugal. An agricultural supply model was developed to simulate the aggregate response to climate change impacts on crop yields and watering needs. The economic model was calibrated using a Positive Mathematical Programming approach. The results show that climate change has negative economic effects on irrigated agriculture in Mediterranean areas. A major decrease in agricultural returns and resource use is expected. Adaptation measures based on the adoption of long-cycle crop varieties to maintain yields could alleviate these losses, but the pressure on agricultural water use and on its economic value would greatly increase.
