Mobilidade geográfica e distância da deslocação em Portugal

The aim of this paper is to analyse geographic labour mobility in Portugal as a function of the distance of the displacement. To our knowledge, this is the first work making this analysis for Portugal. The empirical work is implemented with a logit multinomial. The results show that there is a set of factors which influence individual mobility decisions, namely, age, family ties, wage differentials and unemployment. However, as the estimated probabilities of dislocation are too low, we conclude that this is not an effective mechanism of economic adjustment in Portugal. Therefore, we suggest some policy changes which can improve the working of this mechanism in Portugal.
