Travel Information

The city of Evora

Évora is a quiet and delightful historical city in Alentejo, in the south of Portugal, in the middle of a softly waving peneplain, touched by a Mediterranean climate sweetened by the Atlantic influence of hot, long and dry summers, and soft winters.

A small city of about 60.000 residents with whitewashed houses, arches, and twisting alleyways, 130 km from Lisbon, it was classified by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. It is a true open-air museum, enclosed by medieval walls, with a large number of wonderfully preserved monuments and buildings of public interest: the Roman Temple of Diana, its most famous landmark; the Evora Museum, with its Roman columns, 16th-century paintings, and modern sculpture; the Giraldo Square, the main city square and the best place to start the visit and to return for refreshments; the Cathedral, with a great view over the city; the Church of S. Francisco, displaying the bones and skulls of some 5000 people covering the walls and columns of the church's Chapel of Bones; the Cromlech of Almendres, a megalithic site; among many other interesting places to discover

You can find more information about Évora by clicking here, a map of the city by clicking here (Google map) or here (touristic map) and more information about the University of Évora by clicking here.

Presently, the research unit of CEFAGE-UE, which is hosted by the University of Evora, has 44 integrated members holding a Ph.D. and 4 members who are currently working towards their PhD.

The research interests of CEFAGE-UE’s members cover, among other fields, agricultural economics, econometrics, environmental resources, finance, industrial organization, innovation and entrepreneurship, international economics, labor economics, marketing and consumer behavior, spatial economics and sustainable growth.

For more information on CEFAGE-UE, visit the website http://www.cefage.uevora.pt

University of Evora

The University of Evora is simultaneously an old and a new university. It was founded in 1559 by Cardinal D. Henrique, who handed over to the Company of Jesus. In 1759 - two hundred years after its foundation - the University was closed as a consequence of a royal decree that banished the Jesuits from Portugal. Only in 1973, more than two centuries later, was the University of Evora reconstituted as a public university. It was installed in its original building, the Colegio do Espirito Santo (College of the Holy Spirit), the same building where the 2nd Annual Meeting of the Portuguese Economic Journal will take place.

Currently, the University of Evora offers all different levels of undergraduate and graduate studies within a perspective closely tied to scientific research and artistic creation.

For more information on the University of Evora, see the website http://www.uevora.pt.
