Hermilio Carneiro Vilarinho Fernandes holds a PhD in Industrial Engineering and Management from the University of Porto. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil, in 1988, and a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the Catholic University of Salvador, Brazil, in 1991. He furthered his education with a Professional Master's in Administration from the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil, in 2004, and a Specialization in Environmental Management and Clean Technologies in 1999, also from the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil. Hermilio has an extensive and diverse professional background, having served as a university professor in both undergraduate and graduate programs since 2009 in Brazil. He has also held leadership roles in the field of engineering within prominent organizations in Brazil, the USA, Angola, and Japan. His expertise in Engineering is marked by a focus on Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Project Management, Product Development, and Lean Six Sigma processes and techniques. Notably, he holds the title of Black Belt in the Lean Six Sigma Methodology and is certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP) by the Project Management Institute (PMI). Throughout his PhD studies, Hermilio's research has centred on decision models related to the water sector, with a particular emphasis on assessing utility efficiencies and optimizing asset management initiatives. His academic contributions have been published in top-ranked journals and presented at significant conferences in his field. Additionally, he has served as an assistant professor in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Porto, where he teaches the course on Quality Engineering and Management.
